Ingredients

Scale

Dough Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (not too hot)
  • 2 large eggs

Filling Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh orange zest

Glaze Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons fresh orange juice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Warm the milk until lukewarm and dissolve the active dry yeast in it with a pinch of sugar. Let it sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and orange zest. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and fresh orange juice. Mix everything until a sticky dough forms, then knead for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  2. Prepare the Filling: While the dough rises, mix softened butter with sugar, cinnamon (if using), and orange zest to create a fragrant, sweet filling bursting with citrus goodness.
  3. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the risen dough gently and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle. Spread the butter-sugar filling evenly over the dough. Roll the dough tightly from the long edge into a log. Cut the log into equal slices about 1 to 1.5 inches thick. Place the slices in a greased baking dish, leaving space between them for the rolls to rise again.
  4. Second Rise and Bake: Cover the rolls and let them rise for 30 to 45 minutes until puffed up. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Glaze and Serve: While the rolls are still warm, drizzle generously with a glaze made from powdered sugar mixed with fresh orange juice. Optionally brush rolls with melted butter after baking for extra moistness and shine. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh oranges for the best flavor and aroma.
  • Allow full rise times for soft, fluffy rolls.
  • Knead the dough thoroughly to develop gluten.
  • Keep dough covered with a damp cloth or plastic wrap to prevent drying.
  • Brush baked rolls with melted butter for added moistness and shine.
