Description

This classic Tiramisu recipe delivers a luscious, creamy dessert featuring coffee-soaked ladyfingers and rich mascarpone filling. Easy to assemble with simple ingredients, it offers an authentic Italian taste with a perfect balance of bold espresso and sweet creaminess. Ideal for gatherings or cozy nights, this recipe can be customized for various dietary preferences including gluten-free and vegan adaptations.

Ingredients

Scale

Mascarpone Cream

  • 500g mascarpone cheese
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 100g granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 200ml heavy cream (optional, for extra fluffiness)
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum or coffee liqueur (optional)

Espresso Soak

  • 250ml freshly brewed strong espresso, cooled

Assembly

  • About 200g ladyfingers (Savoiardi)
  • Cocoa powder for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mascarpone cream: Whisk the egg yolks with sugar in a heatproof bowl over simmering water until the mixture is pale and thick, creating a smooth custard base. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly. Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese until just combined and silky. If using, whip the heavy cream to soft peaks and fold it in for a lighter texture. Stir in vanilla extract and rum or coffee liqueur if desired.
  2. Brew and cool the espresso: Prepare a strong batch of espresso and allow it to cool completely. Mix in coffee liqueur or rum if using to add extra flavor. This chilled espresso mixture will be used to soak the ladyfingers.
  3. Dip the ladyfingers: Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the cold espresso mixture, ensuring they absorb the liquid without becoming soggy. Layer them evenly at the base of your chosen serving dish or individual glasses.
  4. Layer the cream and ladyfingers: Spread a generous layer of the mascarpone cream evenly over the soaked ladyfingers. Repeat by adding another layer of dipped ladyfingers followed by cream to build up alternating layers for the classic rich texture.
  5. Chill and dust with cocoa: Cover the assembled tiramisu and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to firm up. Just before serving, sift a fine dusting of cocoa powder over the top for the finishing touch.

Notes

  • Use fresh, high-quality eggs or pasteurized eggs for safety and optimal texture.
  • Brew the espresso extra strong to avoid a watery dessert.
  • Dip ladyfingers quickly to maintain their structure and avoid sogginess.
  • Chill the tiramisu sufficiently to let flavors meld and the dessert set properly.
  • Use room temperature mascarpone cheese to ensure a smooth, lump-free cream.
